ABOUT THE ROSE FOUNDATION

ROSE aims to collect and enhance used lubricating oil within strict environmental standards, prioritizing cleaner production and recycling for economic value.

History

The foundations were first laid in April 1994 after the government withdrew support for the used oil re-refining industry. Previously lubricants were taxed to subsidize the re-refining of used oil back into lubricating oil.When this subsidy was removed, the major lubricant companies operating in South Africa took it upon themselves to help protect the environment. So they formed the ROSE Foundation to prevent the irresponsible dumping and burning of used lubricating oil. ROSE’s primary objective is to collect as much used lubricating oil as possible and to add as much value to this oil within the strictest environmental standards. Our stated objective is to encourage cleaner production before waste reduction and waste minimisation. Failing that we aim to recycle or reprocess used lube oil into economically valuable products.

Building A Brighter Future

Prior to the formation of the ROSE Foundation, the state of the South African used oil industry could only be likened to the ‘Stone Age’.
But the Foundation’s members have taken these stones and used them to build a brighter future for the South African community.

Since ROSE’s formation, our members, the major lubricant companies, have invested over R100 million towards: 
• Building used oil storage depots
• Manufacturing used oil mini tanks
• Environmental awareness advertising and stakeholder communications
• Collecting and safely disposing of used oil
• Encouraging collectors and processors of used oil to meet environmental standards

Strategic Objectives

Influence the collection of all collectable used lubricating oils and related waste. Support Government in implementing enabling legislation to manage used oil and related waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Continue to create an awareness that used oil is a hazardous waste. Members to influence the behaviour of their customers in the management of used oil. Develop sustainable partnerships with groups that have similar objectives. Raise awareness of ROSE’s role and initiatives within member companies. Expand the enviro-centre concept and the number of drop off sites nationally. Roll out bulking points in outlying areas.

Core Business Principles

Conduct our business in a manner that protects the environment and the health and safety of the broader community. Work with Government in developing environmental laws, regulations and standards. Facilitate compliance with all relevant legislation and practice good corporate governance. Develop sustainable partnerships with organisations who are committed to meeting environmental and ethical standards. Support the upliftment of historically disadvantaged individuals in the used oil and related waste industries. Make decisions and investments that further ROSE’s environmental objectives. Support initiatives that promote responsible used oil management in other countries where members operate. Review and adopt global best practice in the recycling of used oil and related waste.

ROSE BOARD AND CEO

The ROSE Foundation is managed by a CEO and supported by a board of seven Directors representing the major lubricant companies of South Africa.

Bubele Nyiba (ROSE)

CEO of the ROSE Foundation

Bubele worked for Engen Petroleum from 2001 to 2016, occupying various senior roles in the HR Department and later in Retail. The last position he occupied before joining the ROSE Foundation was as a Retail Capabilities Manager responsible for training of franchisees and their employees in South Africa and the rest of the African continent. He holds the following academic qualifications: BA; HDE; B.ED, from the University of the Western Cape, and (Executive) MBA from the University of Cape Town. Between 2005 and 2008, Bubele served as a Board member with the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (Chieta) representing the petroleum industry.

Melanie van Straaten

Chairperson

Representing bp & Castrol on the ROSE Board, Melanie joined bp in 2017 within the Global Supply Chain Department as the Logistics Excellence Manager looking after the Continuous Improvement and Project portfolio for the Castrol. She previously held Supply Chain Manager positions within the Retail Sector. Melanie has a BCom degree in Management and has over 15 years experience in supply chain and logistics as well as internal audit. She currently holds the position of Africa Logistics Manager- Castrol, where she has responsibility of all Logistics activities across the African continent. She also manages the Operational Excellence team on an interim basis. Melanie was appointed to the ROSE Board in January 2021.

Dieketseng Meletse

Representing Total

Representing Total Energies Marketing South Africa on the ROSE Board, Dieketseng has been with Total Energies for almost 2 decades. She has experience in Logistics and transport, ranging from strategic project management, Depot operations, Logistics management, technical projects and maintenance. Dieketseng holds an MBA from the Wits business school; She currently holds the position of General Manager HSE for South Africa; and oversees HSE aspects in Namibia and Eswatini affiliates. Her portfolio includes managing special projects related to environmental liabilities, environmental risk management on acquisitions and disinvestments. Dieketseng was appointed to the Rose board in January 2022.

Annaleen Majid

Representing Engen Petroleum Limited

Representing Engen Petroleum on the Rose Board, Annaleen joined Engen in 2013. She was initially responsible for the sustainable growth of Engen’s Base Chemicals Division. Prior to joining Engen, she spent considerable time in R&D within the Forestry/Chemical Industry. Currently Annaleen serves as the Lubricants Technical Advisory Manager for Engen and holds the following degrees: Bachelor of Science (Chemisty) from UKZN, Bachelor of Technology (DUT) as well as a post-graduate qualification in Business Management.

Tshepo Moabelo

Representing Shell

Representing Shell Downstream South Africa on the Rose Board, Tshepo Moabelo joined Shell in 2007 having held various senior supply chain roles and is currently the Supply Chain Manager and Strategy Lead for Shell Lubricants in South Africa. He started serving on the Rose Board as a Shell alternate director in 2017 until he became a full board member in 2022. Tshepo is also a director on the boards of various Shell JVs in South Africa. He holds a holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and various Professional Certifications.

Esther Seabi

Representing FUCHS Lubricants

Representing FUCHS Lubricants on the board, Esther joined Fuchs in 2015 heading the Transformation function as well as being the GM of the Fuchs Foundation Trust. She has a B Soc Sc and MBL degrees. Most of Esther’s career has been in the area of transformation, with some in software support, as well as sustainability and HR specialist.

Axola Myendeki

Representing Astron Energy

Representing Astron Energy on the ROSE Foundation Board, Axola currently holds the position of General Manager for Commercial & Industrial Fuels and Lubricants at Astron Energy, Axola joined Astron Energy in 2022 as a National Sales Manager. Axola has over 20 years’ experience most of which has been in the hydrocarbon and energy space having fulfilled roles with Shell Downstream South Africa, BP and Puma Energy. Axola holds the following qualifications Master’s in Business Administration from Wits Business School, Advanced Finance and Corporate Policy from the University of La Verne (USA), Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration for Wits Business School, Btech Cost and Management Accounting from UNISA, ND: Cost Management Accounting from CPUT and ICiBS from IISA. Axola was appointed to the ROSE Board in August 2023.

Samson Mkhwanazi

Representing Sasol

Representing Sasol Energy on the ROSE Foundation, Samson has a long career with Sasol, stretching for more than 20 years, after moving from Transnet diesel locomotive maintenance depot. He started with Sasol as a Project Engineer in their Secunda plant and moved into business in 2000, focussing on transport fuels and lubricants, where he worked as Principal Technical Advisor, Technical Services Manager and Market Technical Manager for Technical Services, Technology and Strategy divisions. Currently, Samson is in Sasol Energy’s Commercial Energy Solutions division where he has continued to work as Lubricants Business and Technical Manager. Samson is a Registered Professional engineer, and holds BSc/MSc Mechanical Engineering and Masters in Business Administration qualifications, both from Wits University. Samson was appointed to the ROSE Board in November 2011.

Irene von Knoblauch-Dreyer

Representing Flexilube

Representing Flexilube on the ROSE Board, Irene joined Flexilube in 2004 in the commercial arm of the business. As a management trainee, she spent a year in each of the four business units, gaining valuable insight and experience into the operational, commercial, technical and sales aspects of the South African lubricants industry. In 2009, she became General Manager. Prior to joining Flexilube, she worked as an associate in the crisis management and corporate communications team at Burson-Marsteller London. Irene holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Psychology from Rhodes University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Management from Wits Business School. She currently holds the position of Managing Director, tasked with overseeing operations and implementing strategies to further innovate and spearhead sustainable growth of the business and Flexilube brand in South Africa.
